2016: Twelve Months of Exploring

Written by Brian Callender | Photography by Julie Boyd & Brian Callender

2016 has certainly been a memorable year for us, as we shared a number of new adventures that inspired us to get out and explore. We visited four countries, checked a number of items off the bucket list, got engaged in Yosemite, turned this blog into a joint venture, and many more. And while, like everyone, the year has provided some unexpected bumps, we had a fantastic time exploring new destinations and are excited for what 2017 has in store!

Time Travel Tuesday: A Photo Tour of the Scottish Highlands

Written by Julie Boyd | Photography by Julie Boyd

Last summer Brian and I took a  17-day trip to Europe. Without a doubt, my favorite part of the excursion was the time that we spent exploring the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands. We rented a car and nearly traversed the entire isle over a 24 hour period. This week, travel back with us and enjoy some of my favorite photos of the Scottish Highlands!

The Ultimate California Winter Road Trip

Written by Brian Callender | Photography by Julie Boyd

If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones like we are, then you surely know that Winter is coming! And while we don’t expect any White Walkers to interrupt our holiday festivities, this is definitely our favorite time of the year. Here in Southern California the weather has finally started to cool down, and if we’re lucky, there may even be some rain in the forecast. While much of the country prepares for snow, the weather in California (outside of the mountains, of course) remains pretty reasonable throughout the season. It’s the perfect opportunity for a winter road trip through this beautiful state of ours. Pack the car, it’s time to hit the road!

The Mountains are Calling| Chasing the Last Fall Colors in the Eastern Sierras

“The mountains are calling, and I must go.” – John Muir

I was exhausted. I had just finished teaching a workshop on essay writing, shot my last wedding of the year, and I made it through mourning the loss of my grandfather. I finally had a chance to breathe, but I still felt suffocated. More than ever, I needed to get away. I needed to recharge. More than ever John Muir’s famous quote, “The mountains are calling, and I must go,” rang true for me.

Time Travel Tuesday | Joshua Tree National Park, California

Written by Julie Boyd | Photography by Julie Boyd

Joshua Tree National Park lies in California’s Mojave Desert. While Brian and I prefer mountain landscapes, there’s no denying that Joshua Tree has a unique beauty that makes it worth visiting. Ranging from broken up rock hills and boulders, to stretches of rugged terrain covered in wildflowers, cacti, and Joshua trees, the landscape of Joshua Tree is the main star of the park.

Time Travel Tuesday | Fall Colors in the Eastern Sierras, California

Written by Julie Boyd | Photography by Julie Boyd

While Brian and I not-so-patiently wait for our trip to the Canadian Rockies later this month, we thought it would be fun to revisit some of our past trips in a new series called Time Travel Tuesday. As I was scouring my old files for  inspiration, I came across one of my favorite trips to see the fall colors in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, circa 2009. This was my first trip to the East side of range, having visited Yosemite several times, and the splendor of the craggy, snow-capped peaks and brilliant display of golden leaves has left me aching to go back ever since.

Exploring San Francisco in One Day | California

Written by Brian Callender | Photography by Julie Boyd

For my most recent birthday, Julie and I made the short trip up to San Francisco for the weekend. While we work to finalize plans for our next big vacation, these short getaways help keep the travel bug satiated. Since we have been to San Francisco a number of times, I had a very short list of required stops: a Giants game and Ghirardelli.

The Best of Monterey | California

Written by Julie Boyd | Photography by Julie Boyd

Monterey is a beautiful seaside town known for its stunning views of California’s Central Coast, and abundance of marine life. While many people come to visit iconic spots like the 17-Mile Drive and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, there are also a few hidden gems in this coastal retreat. Here are our top five things to do in Monterey.

Mini Vacation Part Two – Monterey

I absolutely love Monterey and was excited to visit the city again two years after our first trip. In 2012, we stopped in Monterey as part of a longer trip up the coast and we spent very little time getting to know the city. Other than our day trip to Big Sur, we had no concrete plans for the duration of our visit. While I love to plan and make trips detailed and organized, it’s also good from time to time to just wing it and go with the flow.
