Castle on Tower Hill: Visiting the Tower of London

Written by Brian Callender & Julie Boyd | Photography by Julie Boyd

Cities, no matter the size, have their hallmarks, their must visit destinations. Chances are, if you find yourself in a big city, there will be no shortage of such places that will make your to-do list. Smaller, less sought after destinations, may have a much more limited selection of “musts,” but still something that locals can point to as the place to be. Come to Irvine here in Orange County and we’ll show you…the Irvine Spectrum? In fairness to our hometown, they do have a ferris wheel! 🙂 These are of course, the biggest draws for tourists, which means you will seldom find yourself alone. But crowds aside, one of the best aspects of visiting these hotspots is for the most part, braving the hoards of people is well worth it. London, of course, is a big city with a long list of places you simply must visit. On our second trip to London, we were excited to visit the infamous Tower of London.

Following in the Footsteps of the Roman Empire: Exploring the City of Bath, England

Written by Brian Callender | Photography by Julie Boyd

On our second visit to England, we decided to explore another of it’s seemingly endless famous cities, Bath. If you’re looking for a great day trip option from London, Bath is an excellent choice. If you have two days, consider combining it with a day in Oxford. The city of Bath, much like York in the north, and others in England, has a history that intertwines with the Roman Empire.

2016 Trip Plans – More Adventures!

Written by Brian Callender | Photography by Julie Boyd

Summer has officially made its way to Southern California, so we have our fans and air conditioner working overtime. All this heat has us daydreaming of cooler locales, foggy mornings, rainy afternoons, and snowy weekend getaways. In that spirit, we’re excited about our next two planned trips! Here’s what we’re looking forward to as we hit the halfway point of 2016:

Last Days in London | England

IMG_3705.jpg

After a very late night in Oxford, we slept in a bit on Friday morning before heading out to soak up the rest of our time in London. To say that we were ecstatic to have the Tube back up and running would be a serious understatement. Sightseeing was the task of the day, and we covered quite a bit of ground in doing so.

Day Trip to Oxford | England

Six years ago, I studied abroad for ten weeks in Oxford and it was one of the best experiences of my life. During that time, I fell in love with the city, the country, and travel. I learned a lot about myself on that trip and couldn’t wait for the opportunity to return and to visit the family who hosted me.

Day Trip to Windsor Castle | England

On our return from the Harry Potter Studio Tour on Tuesday night, we learned that there was likely going to be a Tube strike taking place beginning Wednesday evening and lasting through Friday morning. While we had always intended to take at least two day trips while staying in London (Windsor & Oxford) a strike would almost certainly impact our plans (spoiler alert: it did, big time). Knowing this, we made our way out to visit the town of Windsor and its famous castle.

The Making of Harry Potter – Warner Bros. Studio Tour | London, England

On Tuesday afternoon, we boarded our train and were on our way out to the Harry Potter Studio Tour. After walking around for much of the day, our feet were tired and in need of a seat. The train however, was full of passengers either heading home or like us, out to the studio. Running late for our entrance time, we hastily boarded the first available train with a destination of Watford Junction. This happened to be a train with about twenty stops, making our journey a long one, but our excitement for what lay ahead could not be diminished.

London, Days One & Two| England

Thanks to Friends, I’ll always think of “London Baby” whenever the city crosses my mind. And that’s not a bad thing because I love London and I love Friends :). If you have no idea what I’m talking about, watch the clip below.

Julie and I seriously considered “going into the map” in order to figure out our way around. But since we didn’t have one of those pop-up maps that Joey used (sadly), we settled for Google.

24 Hours in York | England

Six years ago, I visited York for the first time with my study abroad class. The trip was an optional add-on, but everyone went. There was so much that I loved about the city, that I made it a point to have Julie and I transit through there on our way to London. Though we certainly could have made the train trip down from Edinburgh to London in one day, York is a great place for an overnight stop, or longer if you have more time.

Teleport Thursdays – England

This week’s edition of Teleport Thursday is somewhat of a special one as it covers a few different bases for me. In honor of a new Muse song being released by the band today, Throwback Thursday, and the fact that we are expected to hit some high temperatures over the next few days, I’m teleporting off to familiar England. I’ll actually be back in England over the summer and I can’t wait!
