Why We Travel and Why You Should Too

Written by Brian Callender | Photography by Julie Boyd

Without question, we live in a pretty incredible time period in human history. Thanks to technological advances, the world is at its most interconnected, making travel accessible to the masses. Much like it has been since people first roamed this earth, the world can also be a dangerous and scary place. Turn on the evening news and there are no shortage of everyday incidents, from those that affect our neighborhoods, to events that can impact our entire existence. At times, it can seem like there is no sense in leaving your home and putting yourself at risk. But travel is an essential part of understanding one another and learning that, despite our differences, we are all the same. Here are some of the reasons why we travel, and why you should too.

Time Travel Tuesday: A Photo Tour of the Scottish Highlands

Written by Julie Boyd | Photography by Julie Boyd

Last summer Brian and I took a  17-day trip to Europe. Without a doubt, my favorite part of the excursion was the time that we spent exploring the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands. We rented a car and nearly traversed the entire isle over a 24 hour period. This week, travel back with us and enjoy some of my favorite photos of the Scottish Highlands!

Saying Goodbye to Scotland | Edinburgh

With two long days of driving and exploring the Highlands firmly behind us, we had a lazy start to our Saturday morning. In doing so, we nearly missed making it back in time to drop off our rental car. We returned the car with just minutes to spare (they close at noon are not open on Sundays) savings ourselves a headache later on. No longer able to rely on our trusty little Toyota, we were back to public transportation and hopped on a bus headed for Edinburgh city center.

Exploring the Highlands by Car: Part Two | Scotland

Morning loch views
Morning loch views

Friday morning we were treated to this beautiful loch view from our Airbnb.  A view which made the prospect of departing for the long upcoming day an even more challenging prospect. Our host had been fantastic and we wished we had opted to stay for more than one night. But after a nice breakfast, we packed up our little car and headed back down the single track road and made our way towards the Isle of Skye.

Exploring the Highlands by Car: Part One | Scotland

Early Mornings & False Starts

After a long and exhausting first day in Scotland, we awoke refreshed and ready to tackle our second day. Our original plan had been to take a tour of the Scottish Highlands and I spent a fair amount of time researching the wide variety of options at our disposal. Instead, we decided we would be best suited to rent a car and explore the beautiful Scottish countryside at a pace of our own making. Though there is much to be said about the simplicity and ease of a tour, but for our purposes, having our own source of transportation made more sense.

Our Adventure Begins | Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh, Here We Come

Our adventure began bright and early on Tuesday morning. We were fortunate that Julie’s dad was willing to give us a ride down to San Diego to catch our outbound flight to New Jersey where we would catch our connecting flight on to Edinburgh. Originally, the flight we had booked was scheduled to depart at 12:35 p.m. but at some point, had been bumped up to 10:55 a.m. This change, although pushing us out the door earlier, allowed us some extra time between flights once we landed in Newark. That extra time served us well in finding a place to sit down, eat dinner, and catch the second half of the USA vs. Germany World Cup soccer match. Arriving at the airport early, we made it through security with time to spare and sat down to a quick breakfast.

Following dinner and a USA win while in Newark, we caught our connecting flight, waited through an hour delay, and made our way to Edinburgh.
